Introduction
Use Video Splits in Content Lab to break a video into smaller segments, make deletes, reorder key moments, and build a tighter final edit. After you split a video, you can continue editing each segment and export the video in its new order.
Important: Video Splits is designed for a single recording timeline. Multi-video editing and external video support are not part of this version. In beta, AI edits cannot be applied after splits are added.
Before You Begin
- Open a video in the Content Lab editor. You can enter the editor from Content Lab or from Video Library.
- Make sure the video transcript is available in the editor.
- Place the playhead where you want to create the split.
Step-by-Step Guide to Splitting a Video
The following are the steps to splitting a video:

- Open the video in Content Lab.
- Move the playhead to the point where you want to split the video.
- Select Split at word.
- Also, choose the split behavior you want:
- Split at the exact playhead position.
- Snap to sentence to place the split at the nearest sentence boundary.
- Repeat the process anywhere else on the timeline to create more segments.
Note: You cannot split at the very start or end of the video. If the split point falls in the middle of a word or sentence, Content Lab aligns the split to a transcript boundary rather than cutting captions awkwardly.
What Happens after You Split a Video
| Action | What happens |
| Edit segments independently | Each new segment can be trimmed, reordered, or deleted as part of the same video. |
| Keep transcript timing aligned | The transcript is divided with the video and follows the new playback order. |
| Undo or redo the split | You can reverse a split and restore it again if needed. |
| Export the edited video | The final export keeps the segment order you created, and captions stay in sync with the edited timeline. |
Reorder or remove segments

- Drag a segment to a new position on the timeline to change the playback order.
- Delete a segment to remove it from the final video.
- Preview the edited video to confirm that the order, pacing, and transcript flow look correct.
Create a hook from a segment

- If you want to start the video with a compelling quote or moment, you can turn a selected segment into a hook.
- Select the segment or transcript range you want to use as the hook.
- Select Add as hook.
- Review the timeline to confirm that the selected content now appears at the beginning of the video.
Info
- A hook selection must be at least 2 seconds long.
- If an intro is already added, Content Lab places new hooks before the intro because hooks are always inserted at the start of the video timeline. You can drag the intro back to the beginning after rearranging segments, or add the intro after you finish rearranging.
Add a transition between segments

- Hover between two segments until the plus icon appears.
- Select Add, and then select Add transition.
- Preview the video to review the transition effect between those segments.
Tip: In the current beta, the transition option is a basic built-in fade effect. More transition controls may be added later.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Split points follow transcript boundaries so captions remain readable and synced.
- After you apply splits, AI edits are not available for that video during beta.
- Some other editing options may be limited after splits are applied during beta.
- This version focuses on editing one recording at a time in Content Lab.
Troubleshooting
| Action | What happens |
| The Split at word option is unavailable | Move the playhead away from the start or end of the video, then try again. |
| The split is not at the exact word you expected | Use the exact playhead option for more precision, or use Snap to sentence if you want the split to land on the nearest sentence boundary. |
| Captions or transcripts look out of order | Preview the timeline again after you reorder segments. The transcript should follow the new playback order. |
| AI edits are unavailable | This is expected in beta after splits are applied to a video. |
