Magic Link Expiration (TTL)

Discover how to effectively manage magic link expiration using TTL settings for enhanced security and user experience.

Introduction

With Magic Link Expiration (TTL), event organizers can now control exactly how long a Magic Link remains valid after an event ends.

This is especially useful for:

  • One-time live events where post-event access should be restricted
  • Compliance-sensitive events where attendee data exposure needs to be minimized
  • Paid or gated content where access should not persist beyond a set window

Note: Magic Link Expiration applies only to the non-on-demand events. On-demand events default to indefinite link validity since the same magic link is used to access the on-demand content.

TTL (Time-to-Live) defines how long a Magic Link remains valid after it is issued. Once the TTL window passes, the link is no longer active, and the attendee cannot use it to access the event.

  • Any On-demand Event: The magic link doesn’t expire.
  • Any Non-On-Demand Event:
    • Default setting – Expires immediately after the event ends.
    • The organiser can configure a time after which the links expire, preventing access after that point.

Magic Link Expiration is configured at the event level in Goldcast Studio.

  1. Open your event in Goldcast Studio.
  2. Navigate to Edit Event.
  3. Locate the On Demand toggle. Magic Link Expiration is only available when this toggle is off.
  1. Below the On Demand toggle, find the Magic Link Expiration setting.
  2. Select your preferred expiration window from the dropdown (see options below).
  1. Save your settings.

Expiration Options

Option Description
Immediately after event ends Link becomes invalid as soon as the event concludes. (Default)
1 day Link remains valid for 24 hours after the event ends.
7 days Link remains valid for 7 days after the event ends.
30 days Link remains valid for 30 days after the event ends.
Custom Enter a specific number of days. The link expires after that many days post-event. (Maximum up to 30 days)

If an attendee clicks a Magic Link after its TTL has passed, they will see a static page with the message: "This event has ended."

On-Demand Events

Magic Link Expiration does not apply to events running in On-Demand mode.

  • On-demand events are designed for ongoing, self-paced access — links remain valid indefinitely by default.
  • The Magic Link Expiration setting is disabled in Studio when the On Demand toggle is enabled.
  • If you switch an event from live to on-demand, any previously configured TTL will no longer apply.

FAQs

Q1: Does the TTL start from when the link is sent, or when the event ends?

The TTL window begins when the event ends, not when the Magic Link is issued. For example, if you set a 7-day TTL, attendees can access the event for 7 days after it concludes, regardless of when they received their link.

Q2: What happens if I set TTL to "Immediately after event ends" — can attendees access the event during it?

Yes. TTL only affects access after the event ends. Attendees with valid Magic Links can always join while the event is live.

Q3: Will attendees be notified when their link is about to expire?

No. Goldcast does not currently send expiration reminder emails to attendees. If you want attendees to know their access window, we recommend including this information in your post-event follow-up communication.

Q4: Does this affect speakers and staff links too?

Yes. TTL applies to all Magic Links for the event, including those issued to speakers, staff, and producers. Ensure all team members who need post-event access are aware of the expiration window.

Q5: Can I set a different TTL for different attendee types?

No. TTL is configured at the event level and applies uniformly to all Magic Links for that event.

Q6: What if an attendee tries to use an expired link by mistake?

They will see the "This event has ended." message on the page.
